How to: Purl a Stitch

Purl is a basic stitch which creates a lovely bumpy texture in knitting. Here’s how to do it!

Step 1

Holding your working yarn to the front, insert the right hand needle through the first stitch on the left hand needle back to front.

Step 2

Take the yarn between the two needles and around the front.

Step 3

Keeping hold of the working yarn, slip the right hand needle through the loop of the left hand needle from front to back. Pull through the resulting loop (your new stitch)

Step 4

Your new stitch is on your right hand needle. Time to slip the old stitch slip off the top of the left hand needle.

Step 5

The old stitch is now under the new one!

Step 6

Repeat steps 1-5 and then admire your row of beautiful purls :)
